500-600 words = a weekend in Toronto!

It’s time to start your travel writing career, and do we have a great prize for the winner: a weekend stay (two nights for two people) on the Club Level at Toronto’s beautiful Sheraton Centre Hotel in the heart of the city with access to the Club Lounge with continental breakfast in the morning and evening hors d’oeuvres…and of course spectacular north and south views of the city!

On the north, sits City Hall with Henry Moore's infamous bronze sculpture, Three Way Piece No. 2: The Archer (1964-65).  On the hotel’s south is the CN Tower, standing 553.33 metres (1,815.4 ft) tall.  In 1975, it became the tallest free-standing structure in the world ‘til September 12, 2007, surpassed by the still-under-construction Burj Dubai. It remains the tallest free-standing structure in the Americas and the signature icon of Toronto's skyline, attracting more than two million international visitors annually.

The Sheraton is a 10-minute walk to the AGO (Art Gallery of Ontario) In 2004, the AGO unveiled a $276 million redevelopment plan by architect Frank Gehry.  The Globe and Mail called it a "restrained masterpiece." The New York Times wrote: "Rather than a tumultuous creation, this may be one of Mr. Gehry’s most gentle and self-possessed designs. It is not a perfect building, yet its billowing glass facade, which evokes a crystal ship drifting through the city, is a masterly example of how to breathe life into a staid old structure. ..a supple feel for context and an ability to balance exuberance with delicious moments of restraint."

The Sheraton Centre is mere steps away from the Eaton (indoor shopping) Centre, close to opera, theatre and baseball. From Union Station, one may walk completely underground to the Sheraton. The hotel features a 25-metre indoor/outdoor pool connected to a 24-hour fitness centre, sauna and whirlpool, 25 acres of beautiful waterfall gardens , full-service Senses Spa, exclusive access to the 43rd floor Club Lounge with a beautiful panoramic view and a well-equipped gym and several choices for meals.

How to enter the contest: Write and submit a travel article (500-600 words) on a destination of your choice, preferably one not already covered on our website* where there are currently 279 articles written by 58 professional writers to help you with ideas and format. Notice the author bios? We want a short one of you, citing any writing credits or perhaps where you live. By submitting an article, you give us permission to post it on our website. You maintain copyright. Photos? Yes, please if you have them. We generally use 4-5, and they need only be 700 x 700 pixels at most. Often, we are able to access pics from tourism organizations. Please, no 1-megabyte attachments! Text can be in either Word or WordPerfect. At the end, try to include a few applicable url’s that relate to your article, particularly an appropriate YouTube url.  Enjoy the process; become published as a travel writer! Send your entries (you may send more than one) to whattravelwriterssay@cogeco.net. Deadline is June 30. Winner will be posted the first week of July. Hotel may be accessed until Nov. 30, 2009.
