Why the lawn chair soiree ?

In the beginning, when we met in the amazing loft space of nota bene* on Park Avenue, there were no chairs, so we'd tell people to bring a lawn chair or floor cushion...

There are various wonderful literary evenings held in Montreal - we offer yet one more chance to gather and celebrate the power and grace of the creative voice. We are always pleased when we are joined by guests who have made a name for themselves in the literary and/or musical world of Quebec and beyond, but we feel we have a special mandate to extend the microphone to those poets, writers and artists who are relatively unknown, for they often have distinctive and powerful voices to share with us as well. We offer open mike time because many people need to have a place to exercise their individual voices. It's often in reading to others that we best hear ourselves.

Poets, writers, spoken word artists, and singer-songwriters, and other musicians are encouraged to contact us:

sitting duck press

Once we'd become the lawn chair soiree and determined that we'd have chapbooks for each gathering, it became necessary to find a name for our press. It seemed inevitable that we'd have "sitting" in the title, given our lawn chair. The notion of a "sitting duck" hinted at the vulnerable recklessness of our endeavour and so, yet one more small press was born.

sitting duck press continues to produce chapbooks with selected writings reflecting the evenings' performances which will be sold at a modest price.
